  • Shear in a clean place
  • Pick through to loosen debris prior to washing
  • Pull off any damaged or soiled wool, discard immediately away from pets. (Dogs can choke on wool or eat it causing major damage to thier digestive systems!)
  • Shake out any double cuts before storing.
  • You can skip to the spinning now if you want to
  • It is easiest to wash right after shearing!

    • Wool that has been stored over a few months will have to be washed again.
     
     
     
    There are several ways to clean wool 
    this is one of mine...
  • put wool into a large roasting pan or canning kettle.
  • Cover with just enough water to float the wool.
  • Press wool down into water, don't agitate or handle more than necessary.
  • Use half cup washing soda, enough grease cutting dish detergent to make a light sud. 
  • A cup of salt will help scour the fibers as they soak.
  • Heat to simmering on the stove. 
  • Simmer for about 15 minutes.
  • This process may be repeated up to 4 times.
  • Remove from heat & allow to cool to room temperature naturally.

  • Rinse in clear water with about 2 cups of vinegar added to cut the soap curd.
  • Rinse in clear water.
  • Choose either a good liquid fabric softener or hair conditioner, work lightly through the clean wool.
  • Rinse lightly.
  • Place on a clean white sheet over some heavy plastic. (a clean cage, or rotisserie tumbling basket also works well.)

    • Allow to dry naturally.

  • Wool can be fluffed lightly pulling at it with your fingertips.

    •  
  • White wool may be dryed in full sunlight. 
    •  Colored fibers should be dryed in the shade if at all possible.
    if you are using a wood stove for heat, 
    just let the wool set on the stove over night. Drain & Rinse in the morning!
